My best machinist is retiring next month and I dont have a replacement!
Where am I going to get two electronics engineers for my plant expansion?
I cant find the millwright for a new production line in my building.
I could sure use an experienced plant supervisor.
These are the familiar refrains of several North American manufacturing business owners and human resource managers.
The battle for skilled talent in all aspects of advanced manufacturing is a problem that has reached a critical pain point for many organizations. There are several voices lamenting the lack of new entrants or the availability of skill and experienced people for the large number of available advanced manufacturing positions. But what is actually being done on the ground to address this skill labour gap?
Walter Garrison, Advanced Manufacturing Business Integrator in the City of Mississauga’s Economic Development Office, will discuss the City’s approach to supporting its advanced manufacturers with the need for new entrants into manufacturing as well as the upskilling of current employees.
Mr. Garrison will highlight how two City of Mississauga Building Skilled Talent Together events, bringing together advanced manufacturers, with southern Ontario post-secondary and private training organizations, and provincial and federal funding agencies, resulted in numerous positive outcomes for the City’s advanced manufacturing workforce. He will explain how the City successfully created the environment for businesses to quickly and efficiently access the key people required to address their skilled talent shortages. There will be a discussion of the elements required to create innovative cluster training initiatives for companies and the opportunities to leverage existing programs to upskill current employees at a highly reduced cost and, sometimes, with no cost to the company other than the employees time. The key aspects of innovative onboarding programs to access a cohort of new employees will also be detailed.
Are you finding it a challenge to obtain and/or retain employees for your manufacturing business? Listen to how the City of Mississauga has worked together with its manufacturers to solve their workforce development challenges.
