Toronto, ON — He may be best known for bringing budding entrepreneurs to tears as the ruthless ‘show me the money’ judge on CBC Television’s Dragon’s Den, but when Kevin O’Leary speaks, the business world listens. At the Canadian Manufacturing Technology Show 2011 (CMTS 2011), all ears will be on O’Leary as he kicks off the conference portion of the show with his pull-no-punches look at the good, the bad and the ugly of modern manufacturing.

Speaking at 9 a.m. on Oct. 17, the opening day of the show, O’Leary will draw on his personal knowledge and experiences to answer tough questions facing today’s manufacturers, including ‘How will the global recession affect your industry?’ and ‘What can you do to protect your company and come out stronger?’

His opinionated nature, razor-sharp business advice and compelling anecdotes will both impress and inspire, says Nick Samain, event manager with the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME), organizer of CMTS 2011, which will take place October 17-20, 2011, at the Direct Energy Centre in Toronto.

Also speaking at CMTS 2011 is automotive insight journalist and TV host John McElroy, who is expected to make automakers sit up and take notice as he moderates the Automotive Summit, a roundtable panel sponsored by the Automotive Parts Manufacturer’s Association (APMA) at 9 a.m. on Oct. 18. A regular guest on ABC World News Tonight, CBS News and NBC Nightly News, McElroy will get wheels turning in the minds of attendees with comments like: “… the moving assembly line is actually an inefficient way to make cars.”

“From explaining a key union issue or warning about China’s dream of dominating the car lot, to talking about whether car companies should limit customer choices or raising a provocative question about whether electric cars are really all that green, McElroy’s is a rich resource of information that even non-automotive manufacturers will appreciate,” points out Samain. “We’re thrilled to be bringing high-profile speakers like O’Leary and McElroy to our audience and we’re looking forward to the dynamic interaction that will ensue.”

Rounding out the three-day conference portion of CMTS 2011 are 90-minute sessions on topics of current interest, including:

- How to control costs like energy , and how to introduce more efficient processes into a manufacturing business.

- How to improve workforce productivity.

- A look at medical manufacturing, including design challenges facing device manufacturers, recent innovations and the application of additive manufacturing.

- Machining technology and trends, as well as laser cutting trends.

- Manufacturing innovations in the transportation industry.

Additional highlights of CMTS 2011 include a comprehensive trade show featuring live demonstrations and displays from more than 600 suppliers and distributors, along with an industry-wide networking reception.

Troy, Michigan – Seco Tools will introduce new turning insert grades and chipbreaker inserts within its exclusive Duratomic(TM) coating product line at the 2011 Canadian Manufacturing Technology Show. The company will occupy booth 2726 at the event, which takes place October 17-20 at the Direct Energy Centre in Toronto.

Two new insert grades appearing at the show are TK1001 and TK2001. These are the latest additions to Seco’s well-established and extremely popular Duratomic family of turning and milling insert grades. Additionally, there will be a large offering of geometries and chipbreakers designed for the ISO K10-K20 range of cast materials, such as grey and ductile irons. Extremely reliable and versatile, these grades offer better wear resistance, allowing for higher cutting speeds and improved productivity.

Seco will also showcase its new M5 and FF2 chipbreaker inserts. As a result of these inserts, there are now 125 new available items spanning Seco’s Duratomic line to its recently introduced Cermet technology. The versatile M5, a positive-lock chipbreaker for general turning, is ideal for medium and rough machining applications, while the negative style FF2 chipbreaker is perfect for the fine finishing of general applications.

Seco’s exclusive Duratomic technology is a process that creates a durable coating by uniquely arranging aluminum and oxygen atoms to provide increased toughness and abrasion resistance.

In addition to new products, Seco will have its recently launched Minimaster Plus replaceable tip milling system on display at CMTS. This highly productive, precision-focused system makes tool-length re-measurement a thing of the past. It offers a large selection of shanks and inserts for a multitude of applications. Twenty-four versions of the shank are available, along with square shoulder and ball nose inserts that have through tool coolant on all two and three flute designs. The inserts come in two grades for machining all types of materials and E- and M-geometries for a smooth cutting design. Insert diameters range from 0.375″ to 0.625″, and corner radii are available from 0.0157″ to 0.122″ to match a variety of design requirements.

The Minimaster Plus excels in general machining applications for the aerospace, power generation, automotive, medical, and mold and die industries. Such applications range from turbine blades to engine blocks to human implants.

More than 50 per cent of Canadian manufacturers are planning to invest money on manufacturing equipment this year compared to 2010, according to a survey conducted by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers.

Additionally, about 30 per cent of manufacturers are prepared to maintain their spending levels.

Responding to the survey, organizers of this year’s Canadian Manufacturers Technology Show have announced plans for an expanded show at the Direct Energy Centre in Toronto Oct. 17-20.

“Our survey shows that there is optimism for the future and as Canadian companies look for ways to increase efficiencies while keeping costs down, they rely on a venue like CMTS more than ever to help break through the massive clutter of information,” said Nick Samain, CMTS event manager.

“Manufacturers know they need to integrate the latest advances into their daily operations but the challenge is always how to go about doing so,” said Samain. “At CMTS2011, they can see, hear and touch the range of potential solutions all under one roof.”

When asked to name the most pressing challenge they face, one-third of SME survey respondents pointed to either expanding into new markets, finding and retaining qualified personnel, or updating equipment and processes.

And, 22 per cent reported difficulty keeping up with industry trends.

Other survey highlights:

. About 60 per cent of respondents are exploring areas for diversification and 62 per cent plan to upgrade equipment to achieve that goal.

. Almost 11 per cent plan to spend more than $1 million on equipment, 16 per cent plan to spend between $250,000 and $1 million, 25 per cent between $50,000 to $249,999 and 22 per cent under $50,000.

. Finally, two-thirds of respondents said trade shows play a role in their purchasing strategies and 81 per cent use trade shows to see equipment in action.

WINDSOR GETS DRIVE-THRU DONATION HUB

Goodwill Industries has re-established a presence in Windsor with the opening of a drive-thru donation centre at the intersection of Clairview Avenue and Lauzon Road.

Open for almost a month, the centre accepts donations of gently-used goods Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Goodwill plans to open a retail store once more than 50 donors used the donation centre daily. There are also plans for five more donation centres over the next five years.

Funds raised from donations will be used for local employment services and programs.

Donations can include clothing, books, furniture, housewares and toys.

Goodwill operated a store in Windsor for more than 40 years until 1998 when the local operation broke away from Goodwill International and began operating as Helms Industries.

It closed in 2001.

FUNDS FOR AFRICA BEING ACCEPTED

The Ontario Credit Union Charitable Foundation has begun collecting donations to aid in drought and famine relief across Africa.

Local donations can be made at any branch of the United Communities Credit Union with all donations of $10 or more eligible for a tax receipt.

Funds will be forwarded to the Canadian Red Cross and all donations made before Sept. 16 will be matched by the federal government.

RENT INCREASE GUIDELINES 3.1%

Ontario’s rent increase guideline for next year will be 3.1 per cent which is less than half of what the expected cost increase anticipated by landlords will be, according to an organization which represents the rental industry.

The 2012 guideline follows a record-low guideline in 2011 of 0.7 per cent, according to the Federation of Rental-Housing Providers of Ontario.

Increased costs are attributed to inflation, the HST and capital costs associated with Ontario’s aging stock of rental housing.

In a statement, the FRPO says that the average age of Ontario’s rental housing has gone from 29 years in 1991 to 40 years in 2006.
